Baby-PreS–A beloved Latin American nursery rhyme gets a charming bilingual treatment in the latest “Canticos” volume. The chickies and friends are having fun on a beautiful day, racing and playing hide-and-seek. But as with many toddlers, Nicky Chickie gets hurt. To help him dry his tears, the age-old chant follows: “Sana, sana, colita de rana. Si no sanas hoy, sanarás mañana.” (This is typically said to children to ease their pain and discomfort.) Jaramillo translates the song into a simple and fun-to-sing rhyme that will delight children and easily make them forget their sorrow. The coquí character (a Puerto Rican tree frog) pops up every time a chickie gets a boo-boo, because the rhyme includes “patting a froggy’s bum-bum” as part of the healing process. The book’s generous white space and vivid palette make this a good choice for lap-sits and story times.
