Gr 2-5–The natural world has inspired a multitude of inventions that fall under the heading of biomimicry. Using clever riddles and rhymes, as well as lift up flaps that reveal more information, this book shows how natural wonders have inspired inventions of everything from swimming flippers to bike reflectors. Each invention is revealed after a rhyme ends with a cliff-hanger that will have children calling out the answer; this is a great read-aloud for science story hours. Interactive quizzes, hidden behind additional flaps, will likewise engage readers. The text for each invention is relatively brief and will inspire further investigation. This title could be useful for units on inventions or the ways animals adapt.
VERDICT A lift-the-flap book that will inspire children to look at nature in a new way and to find other examples of biomimicry in their environment.
