Usually the Pyrite nominations bring all y’all out of the woodwork, because it’s the moment to champion the books you’ve loved this year.
So either we launched the 2015 Pyrite at a terrible time, right before the insanity of the holidays, or this year is a really dull year.
Which is it?
I’m guessing a bit of both.
It is a dull year. Not a bad year, but a year with a lot of well-written books about which people seem to feel only lukewarm. There’s enough quality out there that there is no shortage of books to support, but nothing that seems to be standing head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd demanding support — and therefore demanding detractors as well. I have a top five, sure, but I have at least five more books I could be talked into supporting above at least some of the books I am currently championing. And I have heard similar sentiments from others.
Also, it was bad timing; I’ve barely touched a computer for the past two weeks, and I suspect I’m not alone in saying that.
So here you go — one last chance to say what you think deserves gold or silver this year for Excellence in Young Adult Literature.
To nominate, click through to comment at the Pyrite post from two weeks ago. Feel free to keep your statements brief (“Great characterization, brilliant plot”) or even skip them if you’ve already said it elsewhere, but if you’ve said it elsewhere and want to link to it, that would be grand.
And if you just want to chat about how there are lots of perfectly nice frogs this year but no clear Printzs, comments are open!
The Pyrite Printz, or Pyrite, is the Someday My Printz Will Come mock Printz deliberation, and should not in any way be confused with YALSA’s Michael L. Printz Award, often referred to here as the RealPrintz or Printz. Our predictions, conversations, and speculation about potential RealPrintz contenders and winners reflect only our own best guesses and are not affiliated with YALSA or the RealPrintz committee. You probably figured that out on your own, but we like to make it clear!
