You have those day-to-day checklists, where you’re making sure you buy air filters and take enough naps, and then you have those bigger checklists of things you’d like to do someday if you can manage it. Our latest episode of The Yarn falls into the latter category for me.
The winners of the 2008 Newbery (Good Masters! Sweet Ladies! Voices from a Medieval Village) and Caldecott (The Invention of Hugo Cabret) challenged our assumptions about format in relation to the biggest awards in children’s literature. And not only were the winning books unique, the banquet celebrating the creators of those books, Laura Amy Schlitz and Brian Selznick, continues to be one of the most talked about. Throw in the fact that 2018 marks the 10 year anniversary and it all seems like now is the time.
In the episode Selznick and Schlitz walk us through that year. Click here to listen to the episode at The Yarn blog.
And for perspective on that year from a Newbery committee member, check out this post at Educating Alice.
