If you could purchase only 100 YA novels for a library serving teens, what would they be? Cast your votes in SLJ’s first-ever Must-Have YA Poll. As part of the magazine’s November 2015 Teen Issue, SLJ is launching the poll to celebrate the vast breadth of young adult literature. Participants can suggest between one and 100 titles that they believe every teen library collection should have on their shelves. While there’s been much debate about what constitutes a YA book, the general consensus finds that young adult novels are targeted to readers ages 12 and up. In “YA: A Category for the Masses. But What About Teens?” K.T. Horning, director of the Cooperative Children’s Book Center of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin–Madison says, “YA tends to deal with the complexities of the adult world, but still very much in an adolescent perspective.” So go forth! Vote for the works that are essential to every YA collection. Be they staples, award-winners, classic YA, or popular titles with teens, what are the must-have YA titles?
