After their successful crossover event in which the Blue Blur met the Blue Bomber, Archie Comics announced a follow-up event last October at New York Comic Con. “Worlds Collide” was a 12-issue event that jumped between Mega Man, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Sonic Universe. Archie Comics is upping the ante in “Worlds Unite” as it adds the worlds of Sonic Boom and Mega Man X into the mix.

Sonic Boom is the newest addition to the Sonic Universe of comics, and it is based on the new cartoon and video game that were released late last year. The series is a counterpoint to Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic Universe, as it focuses more on comedy and action-adventure. It still features Sonic and his friends Tails, Knuckles, Amy, and new addition Sticks, fighting Dr. Eggman and his robot creations.

Mega Man X is a spin-off from the Mega Man video game series. It takes place 100 years in the future, where humans live with reploids, robots that can think and feel. Reploids that give into the dark side of their emotions are called Mavericks. Mega Man X is part of the military task force that tries to control them, known as Maverick Hunters. Mega Man X was introduced into the comics continuum in the story line “The X-Factor,” which then led to a crossover with Mega Man and Mega Man X in the story line “The Dawn of X.”

The new crossover is set to start in May, with Sonic Universe #76 as the issue in which the first blows are traded. Starting in February, issues of all the titles involved will include a countdown on the cover showing how many issues until they enter the event. While all of the titles will have foreshadowing to the crossover, Archie Comics’ Free Comic Book Day (FCBD) offerings on May 2 will feature a prelude to the event in both the Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man issues.

“Worlds Collide” as a big event did well for Archie Comics, so it’s not so surprising they are doing it again. It will be interesting to see how Sonic Boom is integrated into the crossover, with it being so different from the other, more serious, titles. No matter what though, you can count on it being a fun and wild ride!
