College readiness: what is the role of librarians? That was the impetus behind “College Ready,” a new School Library Journal column that will explore related issues and track key initiatives, from community college to online education. The first piece, “Promoting College Readiness via Pinterest,” examines how librarians and other educators leverage social media to put a range of college information in front of their students. Lauren Barack, a seasoned journalist and SLJ contributing editor, will pen “College Ready,” which will appear in the print magazine six times a year. Barack will take a reported approach to the topic, exploring how librarians are currently engaged in prepping students for college as well as covering the important issues as they evolve. For our part, it’s SLJ’s goal to help support that critical bridge between K-12 and what comes after. What’s ahead in “College Ready”? Barack wants to address the emotional readiness of college transitions. “Education is important, but so, too, is understanding what your life will be like (living alone, doing your own laundry, figuring out how to handle situations on your own),” she says.
