Children’s book publisher Candlewick Press announced the acquisition of a new graphic novel this week: Honor Girl, by Maggie Thrash. This will be Thrash’s first full-length work in print; she writes fiction and nonfiction for Rookie Magazine and is the creator of the webcomic Can’t Lose If You Don’t Play.

Here’s the 411 on the new book:

Honor Girl is set in a century old summer camp for girls nestled in the hills of Appalachia where Maggie spent each and every one of her young summers, and where her fifteen-year-old self stumbled into a gut-twisting love for an older, wiser, and most surprising of all (at least to the Backstreet-Boys-obsessed Maggie) female counselor. Maggie’s awakening is so much more than a coming-out story; it isn’t preachy, or flamboyant, or full of self-loathing, it’s just realistic and it’s just complicated. Already a fan of Honor Girl, Ira Glass says, “Though I am neither a teenage girl nor a lesbian, I found this story super-real and relatable.”

The book will be in full color and will be available in Fall 2015.

Publishers Weekly also noted that Candlewick has picked up the third book in Stephan Pastis’s Timmy Failure series.
