Remember the myth of King Midas, whose touch turned everything to gold? The Midas Flesh takes that story and runs with it: Midas never had a chance to have second thoughts, because everything that touched anything he touched turned to gold as well, until the entire earth was just one lump of gold. Thousands of years later, a spaceship, crewed by two teenage girls and a talking lizard, enters Earth’s orbit… That’s about as far as it gets in this first issue, as it’s mostly backstory, introducing the crew—Captain Joey, navigator Fatima (nicknamed Fatty), and the lizard, Cooper, as well as King Midas himself, who’s kind of a bro. Writer Ryan North and artists Shelli Paroline and Braden Lamb are the creative team on this comic; if that lineup sounds familiar, it’s because they also do the Adventure Time comics. This story is a fresh take on the space opera genre, and from the first issue it looks like a good pick for middle-grade readers, although it’s really an all ages story. It’s out this week in comics shops and on comiXology. Check out our preview of the first issue and enjoy!
