She did it again. Kristina Holzweiss, our 2015 School Librarian of the Year and librarian at Bay Shore (NY) Middle School, pulled off the third annual SLIME event—an acronym for Students of Long Island Maker Expo! Held this year on May 20 at the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, NY, the event drew presenters, panelists, and workshop leaders from all over the country, as well as a crowd of enthusiastic local families and educators. Among the attendees was Todd Burleson, SLJ's 2016 School Librarian of the Year, who led the "Game of Drones" workshop. Our 2016 finalists, Anita Cellucci and Laura Gardner, conducted the "ChangeMakers" Workshop and "Touching the Future With TouchCast" workshop, respectively. Throughout the day, K–12 students (and, often, their parents!) enjoyed robotics, art, 3-D printing, wind tunnel parachutes, cosplay, and recyclables activities, all free. “SLIME is a day of learning and fun and making for everyone on Long Island: charter schools, public schools, homeschoolers,” Holzweiss said. The event was presented by Long Island LEADS, a nonprofit of which Holzweiss is president, with support from sponsors. This year, sponsors included MackinMaker, PSEG Long Island, and Capstone.
