New York Comic Con, which took place last weekend, was the last big comic con of 2017, and publishers finished out the season with plenty of news and announcements. We already posted about First Second’s Maker Comics, but here are a few more NYCC announcements.
Dark Horse announced that Faith Erin Hicks, the creator of The Nameless City and Friends with Boys, will take over from Gene Luen Yang as writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender graphic novels, and Peter Wartman will be the new artist.
IDW announced Star Wars Adventures: Forces of Destiny, a mini-series of five all-ages Star Wars comics that focus on the female characters in the franchise, including Leia, Rey, Padmé, Ahsoka, and Hera and, from Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Rose and Paige. All the writers and artists are women as well. This series looks like it will be in the same vein as IDW’s other Star Wars Adventures comics and graphic novels. The publisher, which has a number of licensed comics, also had three other announcements: It will publish Big Hero 6 comics based on the animated series that will be coming soon to Disney XD; a new three-issue Goosebumps story will be coming in 2018, this one by writer Jen Vaughn and artist Michelle Wong; and Ian Flynn, who scripted the Sonic the Hedgehog comics for Archie for many years, will be the writer for IDW’s new Sonic series.
Lion Forge, which has been expanding its Cub House (kids’ comics) and Roar (YA) imprints, also had some new titles to announce at the show:
