Stone's 'A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl' Retained in NC High School Library

Tanya Lee Stone's novel about three teen girls' involvement with a "sexy" senior boy, A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl, will remain in North Carolina's Currituck County High School library, following a 4-1 vote by the local board of education. The vote, in response to a parental challenge to the book for its sexual content, came after recommendations from both a high school review committee and a district review committee to keep the book.

From The Virginia-Pilot:

A sexually charged book about teen girls and their reactions to an ardent senior boy will remain in the Currituck County High School library.

The Currituck County Board of Education decided with a 4-1 vote Monday that “A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl” by Tanya Lee Stone should remain available as it has since 2006, board member Karen Etheridge said.

Aydlett resident Elissa Cooper asked to have “A Bad Boy Can Be Good for a Girl” removed from the Currituck County High School library after her freshman daughter brought it home to read last February.

“My chances may not be very good, but I believe it is a worthwhile argument,” Cooper said by phone Friday. “I’m prepared, and I know 100 percent it is wrong.”

Following the complaint, a high school review committee in June decided to keep the book. When Cooper appealed, a districtwide committee in July also agreed the book should stay.

“The complaint described the book as pornographic,” the committee wrote. “We disagree strongly with this characterization. It would be inappropriate to remove the book because we may disagree with the morals, values or decisions of the characters in the book.”
