2022 Walter Dean Myers Award Winners Announced

A We Need Diverse Books judging committee named Firekeeper's Daughter by Angeline Boulley and Red, White and Whole by Rajani LaRocca the 2022 Walter Awards winners.

We Need Diverse Books announced the winners of the 2022 Walter Dean Myers Awards for outstanding children's literature.

One winner and two honor books were named in teen and younger readers categories.

The 2022 Walter Award winner in the teen category is Firekeeper’s Daughter by Angeline Boulley. The two honor books are Last Night at the Telegraph Club by Malinda Lo and Revolution in Our Time by Kekla Magoon.

In the younger readers category, Red, White, and Whole by Rajani LaRocca was awarded The Walter. The two honor books are Borders by Thomas King, illustrated by Natasha Donovan and Root Magic by Eden Royce.

We Need Diverse Books has tentatively scheduled the seventh annual Walter Awards ceremony as an in-person event on March 11 in Washington, DC. The planned event will include a symposium on children’s literature and will be live-streamed.
