Portland-based illustrator Kalila J. Fuller did the honors for our November 2022 cover story on the representation of Native people, stories, and culture in children's publishing.
Fuller's book projects include FInding My Dance by Ria Thundercloud, a 2022 SLJ Best Book. Her depiction of a Native child taking in authentic stories told by Native elders through books complemented Martha Hinton's feature article.
A frequent SLJ contributor, Hinton spoke to Cynthia Leitich Smith, Joseph Bruchac, Carole Lindstrom, Tim Tingle, and Dawn Quigley about the publishing scene and how the market for children’s books by Indigenous authors has changed for the better.
