The Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals are the oldest and most prestigious of UK children’s book awards. Both winners this year have less-than-happy endings. The Bunker Diary by Kevin Brooks picked up the Carnegie and will soon be available for US readers in spring 2015 – it was just acquired by Carolrhoda Lab. The Greenaway went to This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen – the first book to ever to win both the Greenaway and the Caldecott. Watch. Connect. Read. has links to video of the announcement. The Princess in Black by Shannon and Dean Hale, illustrated by LeUyen Pham. Out October 14, 2014
Some books are just can’t miss. We have one here. A great author(s)/illustrator combo, a great hook (a princess with a superhero alter-ego), and an eye-catching look all join forces. And most importantly, the book’s good too. Keep this low-level chapter book on your radar.
