Lila Perl, author of the award-winning children's book Four Perfect Pebbles: A Holocaust Story (Greenwillow, 1996) died on Wednesday, December 4, at the age of 92, her daughter Diane Barton tells School Library Journal. The news of her death comes just a day after IG Publishing sent her 1972 novel, Me and Fat Glenda—a humorous story about a girl coping with her unorthodox family—to the printer for reissue. In addition to Four Perfect Pebbles—the prolific Perl's fiftieth book—many of her other works for children were renowned for having strong female characters. These include Dumb Like Me, Olivia Potts (Seabury, 1976); Don’t Ask Miranda (Clarion, 1978); and Marleen, The Horror Queen (Houghton Mifflin, 1985). Four Perfect Pebbles, which was named for the Sydney Taylor Book Award, tells the real-life story of Marion Blumenthal Lazan and her family’s experience during interment at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. School Library Journal described it as “A harrowing and often moving account of … (a) family's struggle to survive the Holocaust,” at the time of its publication. Other informational titles by Perl include Mummies, Tombs and Treasure: Secrets of Ancient Egypt (Clarion, 1987); Hunter's Stew and Hangtown Fry: What Pioneer America Ate and Why (Seaburry, 1977); Theocracy (Cavendish/Benchmark, 2008); Isaac Bashevis Singer: The Life of a Storyteller (Jewish Publication Society, 1994); Slumps, Grunts, and Snickerdoodles: What Colonial America Ate and Why (Seaburry, 1975); The Hamburger Book: All About Hamburgers and Hamburger Cookery (Seaburry, 1974); and Eating the Vegetarian Way: Good Food from the Earth (Morrow, 1980). Perl was born in Brooklyn to Russian immigrants Fay Resenthal, a secretary, and Oscar Perl, a stationery salesman. She attended Brooklyn College, where in 2001 she was listed in "The Pride of Brooklyn College" by her alma mater. Her brother is Martin Perl, Nobel Prize-winning physicist. Next year a new novel by Perl, Isabel's War, will be published Lizzie Skurnick Books. Perl is survived by Barton as well as her son, Ken Seidman; two grandsons, Jason Seidman and Andrew Hocking; and her younger brother, Martin Perl. We are currently offering this content for free.
