Heck of a way to start a post that promises images, huh? The reason is that Saturday began with my Caldecott Committee meeting. Mum’s the word on the whole process. I will say this: after some initial nerves, it was about as interesting and enjoyable a discussion as a picture book lover could have.

Next up: convention center. The exhibit hall, with publishers showing their new books, was gloriously overwhelming. Even some of the books themselves seemed overwhelmed:

Publishers always put little signs in their books to show awards and honors. I’ve never see as many as Press Here was sporting. And hey, a Cybils mention!

In the exhibits I ran into Eric Carpenter, a first grade teacher who you might recognize as a frequent (and incredibly sharp) commenter on the Heavy Medal blog, and SLJs Battle of the Kids Books. Side note: we sort of look like each other.

There were a few books that made me double take and this was one of them. Inside are comics devoted to different fun things that have been challenged by the public, like comic books and playgrounds. Definitely a unique take on nonfiction.

The good ol’ Hardy Boys are getting a reboot.

Let us end with this, the latest edition to David Macaulay’s wonderful How It Works series. As my wife, a second grade teacher, said “that book will be popular.” I second that.
