It’s also a good bet when IMDB doesn’t work for you–a more searchy than browsey approach.  My search on politics and “cold war” retrieved some excellent suggestions.

What is my movie accepts voice input and invites users to evaluate results to improve the system and voting matches good or bad to improve positive hits.  Users may search keywords or search by titles, actors, or directors. Results are displayed as a grid with an image of the film or a poster and a plot synopsis. Click on “Watch Now” and you will be taken to the trailer or to Amazon to purchase the film.  Of course, the value is really in the discovery. Once you have the suggestions, you can obtain the film via your usual strategies.

Warning:  the “More Like This” feature will pull you into a series of serious cinematic rabbit holes.

This is a great tool for resolving film quote arguments and it may be a very effective tool to connect content area teachers  with suggestions for film studies relating to curricular topics.

Valossa Labs Oy is a new Finnish startup that includes a development team of Ph.Ds and graduate students from Finland’s University of Oulu.  They share that the Val.ai advanced video analysis platform is powered by the visual search engine Valossa Deep Search.

According to the About page, the AI platform

understands the deep content data of videos and provides novel solutions for discovery, content production and contextual advertising.

Valossa’s technology is capable of analyzing video streams in real-time to identify more than one thousand concepts (e.g. places and objects) from any video stream. This enables automated scene descriptive metadata creation for content production, real-time video content discovery applications and contextual advertising.

And so Valossa Deep Search can process far more complicated tasks than my cold war search.

For example, the About page notes it can tackle  such queries as:

  • Sean Connery in red pants
  • scifi movies about space battles and laser guns
  • Eastwood protecting the president
  • comedy in Hawaii
  • nonviolent princess movies
  • romantic comedy movies involving career issues and family

Thank to Phil Bradley and my fabulous Rutgers grad students for this lead!
