But did you know there was another day, in the fall where you could pick up more free comics? Halloween ComicFest is relatively new, having just started in 2012. It occurs on the Saturday before Halloween, and like FCBD, participating comic book stores have free comics to give away. The big difference being that the comics are themed for the season.

Adventures of Ernie 197x300 Halloween ComicFest: The All Ages EditionThis year, Halloween ComicFest is on October 25th. While Halloween usually conjures up images of horror and gore, this year there are several titles fit for the little trick-or-treater in your house. The comics come in two types: Full size and mini. Full size comics are like the regular floppies you see at the comic book store. Some of the titles will be familiar with readers of the This Week’s Comics List: Hero Cats/Princeless from Action Lab Entertainment, My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic HCF 2014 Edition from IDW Publishing, and Scooby Doo Team Up #1 featuring Batman HCF Edition from DC Comics. Some new titles will be available as well. Aspen MLT is jumping into the all ages waters with the special The Adventures of Ernie, a comic about a playful seahorse from the Fathom Universe. Marvel has two comics old and new fans will want to check out: Marvel Comics #1 HCF Edition is a reprinting of the first ever Marvel Comic featuring the original Human Torch and Namor. Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars #1 HCF Edition is a reprinting of the first issue of Secret Wars from 1984, which started the mega crossover events we see today.

Fright Fest 2014 194x300 Halloween ComicFest: The All Ages EditionMini comics, which are more like samplers, are usually what you see at FCBD. The mini comics are all safe for your favorite little monster. Titles include Angry Birds from IDW Publishing, Betty and Veronica HCF Edition from Archie Comics, Mermin from Oni Press, Plants vs Zombies: Timepocalypse from Dark Horse Comics, Vamplets: The Undead Pets Society from Action Lab Entertainment, LBX: Little Battler’s Experience From Perfect Square, and Boom! Studios Halloween Fright Fest which features tales from Adventure Time, Fraggle Rock and Peanuts.

Not all comic book stores participate in the Halloween ComicFest, but to find the one nearest you, you can go to the Halloween ComicFest website. They have a Store Locator as well as more information on all the comics available. You’ll also want to go early, especially if you’re interested in a full size comic. This will most likely go fast. I’d really encourage you to check it out if a store near you is participating. What better way to inspire a love of reading than with some spooky stories everyone can enjoy?
