Gr 9 Up–Award-winning filmmaker Bob Gliner’s new documentary focuses on the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative (GLSI) in Michigan, a statewide initiative that centers on school reform through the students’ environment. Urban and rural students of all ages learn and practice science and environmental knowledge and skills. In doing so, they make connections to their physical surroundings, history, and community, while developing solutions and even new technologies. High school students partner with younger students, from releasing salmon they raised to planting non-invasive species in a derelict dump site. School administrators discuss the pressure to justify time spent outside the classroom, and the film demonstrates that this activity is well-spent, meets many academic standards, and has lasting impact on the students’ education. In addition, the initiative fosters school-community partnerships and could be a model of reform for public education. High school students and educators at any level can benefit from the material in this title.–Denise A. Garofalo, Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, NY
