We have big news this morning: The comics publisher IDW is announcing a new series based on Habro’s web series Hanazuki. Just launched in January, Hanazuki is a cheery cartoon about a girl who lives on a moon and fights off a big black blob by using her emotions to grow trees. Her companions are a bunch of multicolored bunnies (called Hemka) who embody different moods, and a myasterious sleepy baby floats over from time to time to give her different objects to activate with her emotions. It’s funny and colorful and filled with cartoon action, and the first episode has garnered over 3 million views on YouTube.
The first issue of the comic will have the same storyline as the first episode of the series. Here’s what IDW assistant editor and series writer David Mariotte has to say about it:
Hanazuki’s been a wonderful project to work on. Hanazuki’s filled with everything I love—pretty colors, adorable characters, a female-lead, action, adventure, heart, Sleepy Unicorn, giant floating mouths, light science-fiction, a genuine understanding of the complexity of emotions and, of course, fun! The team at Hasbro has built a phenomenal world—well, a phenomenal moon—and being able to take the animated series and translate it into comics (with my conspirators Nico Peña and Valentina Pinto) is quite an undertaking, but I think we’re going to nail it. Anyway, you’re gonna wanna snatch this one up like a Hemka!
And here’s the solicit information from the Previews catalog, along with a look at the regular and variant covers, to give you an idea of the look:
