Engaging, informative documentary explores "The Last Orangutan Eden" | DVD Pick

orangutanThe Last Orangutan Eden. (Nature). 53 min. Dist. by PBS. 2015. $19.99. ISBN 9781627892834. Gr 4 Up–This documentary follows ecologist and host Chris Morgan on his journey exploring the plight of orangutans within the jungles of Northern Sumatra. Deforestation of their habitat is causing the species to diminish. Young orphans are taken to a rehabilitation center, where they can recover and eventually be released to a nature reserve. Since orangutans learn how to survive in the wild by watching their mother and elders, the human caregivers at the rehab center must now teach them skills such as climbing. Researchers carefully observe the apes in the wild to learn how information about problem solving, foraging, sleeping, eating is passed from generation to generation; the young stay with the mother for nearly 10 years, learning from her example. Students will love this intimate look at the problems faced by orangutans and will also learn about an important global issue. Educators should be cautioned that there is some potentially objectionable language, such as when the guide describes the heat of the jungle as “human hell.” VERDICT This is a great tool for communicating the importance of caring for the animals.–Jenny Ventling, Greene County Public Library, OH
