What makes democracy work? That’s the central question posed in an eight-week educational campaign launched by Facing History & Ourselves. School Library Journal has partnered in the effort, creating a related book list: “Foundations for Future Voters.” With titles geared for elementary and middle school as well as teen readers, the list of books covers topics related to democracy and citizenship, including free speech, religious freedom and tolerance, civil disobedience, and the role of the press. Curated by SLJ editors, the list is available as a PDF download (see below). “Foundations for Future Voters” will also be distributed by Facing History & Ourselves, a nonprofit international educational organization. In today’s world, political and social tensions, eroding trust in institutions, and rising incidents of hatred and bigotry make an active consideration of democracy more essential than ever, according to Facing History & Ourselves.
