In a world of rapid digital change, the picture book is a powerful reminder of why traditional bookmaking matters. There’s something important in a book’s very physicality and the way it brings together adults and children in a shared reading experience. This webinar teaches proper picture-book terminology and will help you become comfortable discussing a book’s visual elements such as trim size, orientation, jacket, cover, and endpapers as you come to understand how these components enhance, underscore, and otherwise interact with the text. You’ll discover an exciting, interactive new alternative to traditional storytime that invites children to become active participants: The Whole Book Approach.
Megan Dowd Lambert began laying the foundation for the Whole Book Approach when she was working for the education department of the Eric Carle Museum and earning her graduate degree in children’s literature from Simmons College. Several years—and about twenty-five thousand students and three thousand professionals—later, Megan is ready to share her groundbreaking technique for reading picture books with young children.
“I wanted to reflect on and value specific moments of insight, delight, wonder, puzzlement, and pleasure that have arisen from the times when I’ve met children in the pages of picture books and have really listened to what they have to say about what they see and hear.”
—from the preface of Reading Picture Books With Children, by Megan Dowd Lambert
Joined by editorial director, Yolanda Scott, and educator, Emily Prabhaker, Megan introduces this practical method for reshaping storytime. Whether it takes place in the classroom, library, or home, a Whole Book Approach storytime serves as a primer on the picture book art form for readers of all ages. With examples from books available in most school libraries, adopting the Whole Book Approach for your storytimes is easy, enriching, and rewarding.
