Billy and Goat at the State Fair. 7 min. Dist. by Dreamscape Media. 2015. $38.99. ISBN 9781681411545. PreS-Gr 1–The DVD version of Dan Yaccarino’s picture book (Random, 2015) is enhanced by the upbeat music befitting a visit to the fair. The simple story follows Billy and his prized yet nameless goat on their adventures. When Billy sees a billboard advertising the state fair and learns that there will be a best goat competition, he’s sure that his will win. This adaptation focuses on each part of the billboard as it is dramatically read, which effectively builds excitement. When the friends arrive at the fair, Goat’s sense of adventure takes over, and Billy spends most of his time on a wild goat chase. They are reunited on the parade’s biggest float and enjoy spending the rest of their time together. Too late for the best goat competition, Billy is satisfied knowing that his really is the best goat. Yaccarino’s illustrations are animated just slightly—a swing rocks, the goat blinks occasionally, and, in the best example, the two ride home in a truck while fireworks pop in the night sky above. The limited palette of primary colors and the flat illustrations give the production a retro look. Overall, the video is superior to the book for giving a clearer sense of Billy’s pursuit of his runaway friend by breaking up the four-part pages into individual scenes. Viewers will relate to Billy’s fear of a busy, new place and of being separated from his friend. VERDICT Yaccarino’s sweet, reassuring story is enhanced by simple animation and a cheerful sound track.–Constance Dickerson, Cleveland Heights-University Heights Public Library, OH We are currently offering this content for free.
