Sora Report: Digital Reading Increases with Double-Digit Growth in Comics and Graphic Novels

The State of K-12 Digital Reading breaks down the data for the 2022-23 school year, showing the popularity of comics and graphic novels in the digital format plus regional differences in reading habits.

The use of ebooks and audiobooks reached an all-time high during the 2022-23 school year, according to Sora's State of K-12 Digital Reading report.

Reading sessions were up more than eight percent while total books read per student increased almost 3.5 percent. Comics and graphic novels saw a double-digit increase in readership.

Four categories consistently dominated the top five most popular ebook genres: comics and graphic novels, humor (fiction), fantasy, and biography and autobiography. When it came to the No. 5 spot, though, it depended on the region. For the Northeast, it was sociology; the southeast and southwest sought sport and recreation books; the midwest went for YA romance, and the Pacific Northwest read nature titles.

The study also reported the top three months in average reading time and found good news for those worried about the summer slide. July topped the list with 4.6 hours of reading, followed by June at 2.6, and March at 2.3.
