The 21^st Century Children’s Nonfiction Conference is back, boasting three days packed with workshops, panels, and presentations by a prestigious group of industry professionals. This year, the event will be held on the Iona College campus in New Rochelle, NY, June 10–12. The conference, now in its fourth year, attracts a mix of authors, illustrators, educators, and members of the publishing community. Organizers Lionel Bender and Sally Isaacs hope “to raise the profile of nonfiction,” “to highlight changes in the industry,” and to provide a forum “to exchange ideas,” and “establish new business models and ways of delivering nonfiction that excites and educates a young audience.” A sampling of the sessions slated for 2016 include trends in children’s and young adult nonfiction; new voices and formats; nonfiction research, writing, and illustration; digital nonfiction; audio; and publicity, promotion, and social media. Using and promoting nonfiction in the classroom are addressed in a number of workshops. Candace Fleming, Steve Sheinkin, Lesa-Cline Ransome, James Ransome, and Roxie Munro are just some of the authors and illustrators on this year’s roster of presenters. Industry experts Roger Rosen (Rosen Publishing), Julie Gribble (KidLit TV), Ariane Szu-Tu (National Geographic Kids), and Michelle Bisson (Capstone), among others, will contribute insight into the publishing process, from “submission to sales.” For many, a highlight of the conference are the numerous opportunities to network. Attendees are welcome to submit requests and suggestions for “open table conversations,” which the event’s organizers plan to arrange throughout the weekend. Meals, breaks, a barbecue, and informal discussion groups provide additional occasions to interact and exchange ideas. Early bird registration ends on May 1.
