Gr 4-6 –When lighting strikes his amulet, Dummie the mummy finds himself alive again. Soon, he meets Angus Gust, an ordinary kid living in a boring town with his rather unusual artist father. Pretending Dummie is a distant relative, Angus and his father take Dummie in and help him adjust to real life. Fitting in, however, is hard when you are covered in bandages, can’t eat, and have a bit of a smell to you. The illustrations are detailed and entertaining. The magical elements mix well with the realistic parts and are easy to follow. Dummie and Angus are likable, and their friendship develops realistically. The addition of Egyptian history and pharaohs adds an educational element without overwhelming the plot. Although the secondary characters are one-dimensional, the plot is humorous, engaging, and will appeal to those who like series like “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Dork Diaries.” VERDICT Fans of humorous friendship stories and Roald Dahl will appreciate this light romp.–Kira Moody, Salt Lake County Library Services
