EveryLibrary Launches New Resources to Fight Censorship, Track Legislation

The nonprofit organization offers comprehensive resources on creating community advocacy organizations to fight censorship, and monitor and speak out against legislative efforts.

In its continuing efforts to fight for libraries and intellectual freedom from all angles, EveryLibrary has launched new comprehensive resources.

Fight for the First is a digital organizing and advocacy site that provides the training, networking, and organizing infrastructure to help communities combat local book banning efforts.

The nonprofit is also tracking legislation that is impacting book collections and education across the country. The 2023 tracker of concerning bills will be continually updated.

Continuing on the legislative side, the EveryLibrary Institute released a new policy brief, "Opposing Attempts to Criminalize Librarianship through State Obscenity Laws," which includes a review of state legislation (bills that passed and those that did not) in the 2021-22 state legislation session, contextualizing the legislation attempting to criminalize librarians and educators, and tips on effective messaging about censorship.

EveryLibrary also offers model legislation, the 2023 model School Library Database Procurement Act, focused on proactively protecting state library contracts from anti-access initiatives.
