The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) place considerable emphasis on genre. In this presentation, Nell K. Duke, co-author of Reading and Writing Genre with Purpose in K to 8 Classrooms, explains how the CCSS address genre in the reading and writing standards. She shares examples of projects that engage students in authentic reading and writing specific genres highlighted in the CCSS, and describes the ways in which school librarians can provide impetus and support for these kinds of projects. • Nell K. Duke is a professor of Literacy, Language, and Culture and a faculty affiliate in the Combined Program in Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan School of Education. Dr. Duke’s work focuses on early literacy development, particularly among children living in poverty. Her specific areas of expertise include development of informational reading and writing in young children, comprehension development and instruction in early schooling, and issues of equity in literacy education. She has received awards for her research from the International Reading Association, the National Council of Teachers of English, and the American Educational Research Association. Dr. Duke is the co-author and co-editor of many books on literacy including The Handbook of Effective Literacy Instruction: Research-based Practice K to 8 and Reading and Writing Genre with Purpose in K–8 Classrooms. She speaks widely about the Common Core State Standards and informational text.
