NCAC Honors School Librarian Martha Hickson, Author George M. Johnson, Colin Kaepernick, and Others

New Jersey high school librarian Martha Hickson is the NCAC's 2022 recipient of the Judith Krug Outstanding Librarian Award.

New Jersey high school librarian Martha Hickson is the 2022 recipient of the Judith Krug Outstanding Librarian Award, the National Coalition Against Censorship (NCAC) announced on Monday. Hickson is one of the Free Speech Defenders being honored by NCAC, along with All Boys Aren't Blue author George M. Johnson; former NFL quarterback, children's author, and founder of Know Your Rights Camp Colin Kaepernick; and others.

Hickson has successfully fought six attempts to ban books and actively protects students’ right to read in her district. She wrote a first-person account for SLJ of her battles, the personal and professional consequences, and her return to fight again.

She has spoken about standing up for intellectual freedom and access for students at various conferences and is the first call for many fellow school librarians who find themselves in need of advice when facing censorship attempts.

Author David Levithan will present Hickson with her award.
