'Salt Magic,' 'The Legend of Auntie Po,' and 'Run: Book One' Among 2022 Eisner Award Winners

Hope Larson, Rebecca Mock, and Shing Yin Khor among the creators honored at the annual awards for the comics industry.

The 2022 Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards were given out at Comic-Con in San Diego on July 22, and several children's titles and creators were honored. 

Chibi Usagi: Attack of the Heebie Chibis by Julie and Stan Sakai (IDW) won Best Publication for Early Readers (up to age 8), Salt Magic by Hope Larson and Rebecca Mock (Holiday House/Margaret Ferguson) was named Best Publication for Kids (ages 9-12), and The Legend of Auntie Po by Shing Yin Khor (Penguin/Kokila) earned Best Publication for Teens (ages 13-17).

In addition to the winners of those designated kid lit categories, the grade 8 and up Run: Book One by John Lewis, Andrew Aydin, L. Fury, and Nate Powell (Abrams ComicArts) was named Best Graphic Memoir.

In kid lit-adjacent honors, Bob Bolling—likely best known in the children's literature world for his work on "Archie" comics, including the creation of the spin-off series Little Archiewas one of two recipients of the Bill Finger Award for Excellence in Comic Book Writing. And middle grade favorite Raina Telgemeier (with Casey Gilley) won Best Short Story for “Funeral in Foam,” from the adult anthology You Died: An Anthology of the Afterlife.
