Junior Library Guild (JLG) has called it. The editors of JLG, the collection development and book review service (a sister company of School Library Journal), have a sharp eye for quality children’s and young adult literature, given the results of the American Library Association’s (ALA) Youth Media Awards (YMA)  announced January 27 at ALA’s Midwinter Meeting. Many of the top awards were JLG picks, including the Newbery and Caldecott Medal winners, all four Newbery Medal Honor books, the Robert F. Sibert Award winner, all four Sibert honor books, and the Michael L. Printz Award winner. Among the 35 JLG selections honored by the YMAs were Newbery Award winner Kate DiCamillo’s Flora and Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventure (publisher), the story of cynical Flora and her poetry writing, superhero squirrel, Ulysses, Caldecott winner Brian Floca’s Locomotive (Atheneum), an immaculately illustrated and informative depiction of the Transcontinental Railroad, the Sibert Award winner Cindy Trumbore and Susan L. Roth’s Parrots Over Puerto Rico (Lee & Low), a lushly illustrated history of Puerto Rico and its parrots, and the Printz Award winner Marcus Sedgwick’s Midwinter Blood (Roaring Brook), an intensely ambitious novel that spans centuries. JLG also selected two Theodor Seuss Geisel honor books, two Caldecott  honor books, the Coretta Scott King Award winner and honor books, and two Stonewall honors. See a full list of the JLG titles. JLG reviews more than 3,000 new titles each year, and 95 percent of their choices go on to receive honors, awards, and/or favorable reviews.
