Board Books

Five Little Leprechauns by Jeffrey Burton. illus. by Tommy Doyle. S. & S./Little Simon. ISBN 9781665910835.
Toddler-PreS–A playful and festive board book twist on the classic nursery rhyme “Five Little Monkeys,” just in time for St. Patrick’s Day. In this rhythmic romp, impish leprechauns play a mischievous game of hide and seek. VERDICT Little ones and their grown-ups will delight in chanting this fun-filled twist on the classic nursery rhyme together long after the holiday festivities have ended.

You Shamrock My World by Rose Rossner. illus. by Ela Smietanka. Sourcebooks/Wonderland. ISBN 9781728256337.
Toddler-PreS–Pairs of clovers, unicorns, and fairies are just some of the adorable illustrations in this punny board book. Each pair consists of a child and an adult. Loving, rhyming puns are each set on a bold colored background with a singular embellishment such as hearts, a leprechaun’s hat, or gold coins, that ties into the whimsical illustrations of the pairs on the corresponding pages. VERDICT Full of puns and rhymes, this short, colorful book is a great addition to St. Patrick’s Day collections.

Picture Books

Happy St. Patrick’s Day from the Crayons by Drew Daywalt. illus. by Oliver Jeffers. Philomel. ISBN 9780593624333.
PreS-K–When Green Crayon goes on vacation, the other colors step up to cover St. Patrick’s Day. Blue and Yellow work together on the shamrocks, while everyone else pitches in to draw a leprechaun, harp, rainbow, and pot of gold. Jeffers’s crayon illustrations depict the personified crayon cast from the other books in the series. VERDICT Order to satisfy fans of Daywalt’s other “Crayons” books.

St. Patrick’s Day, Here I Come! by D.J Steinberg. illus. by Emanuel Wiemans. Grosset & Dunlap. ISBN 9780593387191.
PreS-Gr 1–Steinberg has added a St. Patrick’s Day volume to his popular “Here I Come” series. Written in short four-to-six lines of rhyming text, which are contained on one page or on spreads, the text is humorous and rife with witty puns that will make children and adults smile. Wiemans’s artwork coordinates well with the text and brings the humor to life. VERDICT A cute must-have for displays, older children’s story time, or a quick read before a St. Patrick’s Day program.
