Pickin’ in the Garden. Performed by the Funky Mamas. CD. approx. 45 min. AV Café. 2012. ISBN unavail. $15. PreS-Gr 3–Chantal Von Maydell,Tannis Maynard-Langedijk,GeorgiaUrban, and Kate Vsetula are the members of the Canadian band, The Funky Mamas. They present 15 upbeat, lively, fun songs in folk, country, rock Latin, bluegrass, ragtime, and funk musical styles. The musicians give excellent vocal and instrumental performances on guitar, ukulele, mandolin, bass, violin, upright bass, banjo, fiddle, harp, keyboard, clarinet, trumpet, tuba, harmonica, drums, and percussion. Three of the songs are in French: “Mon P’tit Lapin,” “Tirer Ma Vache,” and “Maple Sugar/Les Fraises et Les Framboises.” Two songs are traditional: “Down on the Farm” (to the tune of “Down by the Bay”) and “Ten Hot Sausages” (with playful sound effects). Among the other numbers are “Turn the World Around,” “Messes,” “Pickin’ in the Garden” (to the tune of “Skip to My Lou”), “Rocks Rock,” “Go Mama Earth” (everything is connected to everything else), “Veggie Patch Hoe Down,” and “Lightning Bugs.” In addition, storyteller Brad Woods expressively recounts two tales. In “The Fox and the Rooster,” the two animals trick each other. “Mama Mouse” finds it useful to have a second language when she barks to scare away a cat. A great album for the whole family.–Beverly Wrigglesworth, San Antonio Public Library, TX
