Because this volume falls somewhere in between a how-to guide and research material, it may be difficult for it to find an audience. But once teens begin to read, they will gain knowledge about timely topics and may be inspired to act for change.

Despite the laudable topic, the sparse content and lack of balance make these volumes of little value. Children will be better served by Kathleen Krull's Lives of Extraordinary Women: Rulers, Rebels (and What the Neighbors Thought) (HMH, 2000) and Grosset & Dunlap's "Who Was" and "Who Is" series for more thorough explorations of notable individuals.
