Gr 2-6–Gifford provides a cornucopia of information for curious readers. The book’s organization is eye-catching and practical from the first turn of the page. One of the favorite sections is sure to be Gas Attack! Under the subheading “Flying Farts,” readers will learn about a flight that had to make an emergency landing because the fire alarm went off. The alarm sounded because of the passengers—2,000 gassy goats! The book covers wild topics including dung domination, battling B.O, and how to say smelly in other languages. Illustrator Gamlen has ensured that no page layout is the same. He uses creative colors, unique shapes, and different fonts. One bonus feature is the use of two reoccurring graphics. One of these graphics shares hands-on activities to try and the other provides information about an occupation that uses the sense of smell.
VERDICT An excellent addition to any nonfiction collection. You Smell! is a hilarious, fact-packed journey through the world of smell.
