Gr 9 Up—When documentary filmmaker Glen Dunzweiler found himself close to losing his own home, he set off across the United States to find out about homelessness in America. He chose to live in his car, and though he had a place to go to at the end, he did, to a certain degree, live as someone without an address. Many myths are addressed here, including that all those on the streets are mentally ill or drug addicts. Viewers learn that one-fourth of the homeless population in the United States are made up of military veterans and include families with young children. A good number have suffered job loss or economic downturn. There are also many teens living on the streets, having left abusive situations at home. The film combines Dunzweiler's experience with his interviews of current and formerly homeless people and those who work with them. Several younger people are interviewed, but that is not the overall focus. Although the date of the film is 2016, it appears somewhat older. No date past 2009 is mentioned by the filmmaker or interviewees. There is occasional muted cursing.
VERDICT Potentially useful in a sociology, personal finance, or family living class.
