Gr 6–9—This series, originally published in Canada several years ago, injects a shot of girl power into the biography arena. Each book examines the lives of 11 women, and quality and readability are inconsistent among the titles. Many of the subjects are Canadian. Ball's Leaders and Writers are the best of the six, offering the most diverse selection of women in terms of level of fame, achievement, and country of origin. Athletes is the weakest of the set, concentrating too much on obscure people and sports. Space, Inventors, and Scientists do not shy away from complex concepts and jargon. Some of the entries are dry and didactic. Nonetheless, students who require research materials might find enough to get started, but they will be better served by the excellent titles found in the lists of additional resources.
