Gr 2–4—Maggie has a secret: her father is an alcoholic. Her trials will be all too familiar to readers experiencing similar issues. The book is clearly the work of experts as it addresses pertinent feelings and fears without upsetting young readers. The father, while flawed, is not portrayed as a bad person, nor is the cautious use of alcohol vilified. Unfortunately, the story line—Maggie's dad is drunk at her birthday party—has poor continuity and the cartoonlike illustrations, while large and colorful, are unattractive. Though its nonfiction designation and weighty subject matter will minimize browsing, the important message conveyed is strong enough for this book to be considered to fill in collections.—Rebecca Dash Donsky, New York Public Library
