Children and Adults Share Words of Wisdom

COPY ISBN
Gr 3—6—Members involved with this project spent a year collecting "words of wisdom" from children and "elders" around the globe. This title groups selected quotations in thematic sections related to self-worth, peace, and nature. The attractive layout features uncaptioned photos of children of various ages and races. Their countries of origin are not identified, either in the images or quotations, which are attributed only to a child's name and age. Among the "elders" quoted are actors, authors, illustrators, and educators. Brief biographies appear at the end of the volume. Although some children may browse the contents, particularly to view the photos, the book's intended audience appears to be adults. Both the foreword and the suggestions about how to use the book are addressed to them, especially as they promote ways to share wisdom among generations. Perhaps the book could find a place in a teacher-resource or family-education section, or senior center, but it may require "hand selling" to move it from the shelves.—Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato
With quotations from children and adults (some famous, some not), this is less a book that children will pick up on their own than one adults could use to spark discussion with them. Attractive photos of children from eighteen countries reinforce the idea of wisdom as a global resource.
