Gr 4–7—A richly illustrated selection of 31 poems and excerpts from Shakespeare's most popular works. The selected writings provide a fantastic scope of Shakespeare's oeuvre. All of his most famous poems and plays are present and accounted for. For many readers, Shakespeare's poetry and prose can be quite dense, and this collection is unedited. The type is small, and many selections are longer—some excerpts contain almost 20 definitions of difficult or antiquated terms. López's illustrations are intricate, dramatic, and moody; they help to bring life and meaning to the words.
VERDICT This collection is better suited for strong, tween readers who may be put off by its picture book appearance and "Poetry for Kids" series moniker, but the collection could also be enjoyed by younger children guided by adults.
