K-Gr 2–Originally published in France, this pop-up book uses a guessing game to teach animal facts. Five habitats are explored; a different animal (hippopotamus, mandrill, polar bear, toucan, and tiger) is hidden in each environment. The clues to an animal’s identity cover diet, behavior, physical features, and unique characteristics. Once readers make an informed guess, they are required to lift up a small tab gently, as the book’s construction will not withstand a rough grip or pull. The art is a creative take on pop-ups; for example, a spiral cutout houses the mystery animal dangling inside. For the most part, the text is smooth and well organized. However, the format is not suitable for story time, as the reveal may not have the same impact in large groups. One-on-one would work, but it would be unwise to circulate without diligent supervision, and that would reduce the children’s fun drastically.
VERDICT While this book offers an appealing interactive reading experience, it does not seem well suited for the high circulation demands of a library.
