PreS-Gr 2—Readers are asked the titular question for each pair of intricately designed animal eyes that featured in this oversize and vividly colorful book. The colors, including neon orange, pop off the page. The lyrical text is a work of translation, which explains the unique phrasing of some of the animal descriptions ("the jellyfish says, 'As I drift along, I vex and sting…'"). Children will be fascinated by the illustrations and will enjoy learning about each animal spotlighted in the main text and mentioned in the end pages. The large size is excellent for sharing with groups or for classroom exploration but may be cumbersome to shelve.
VERDICT A solid choice for elementary school libraries and classrooms with high animal interest and large poetry or art collections.
