PreS-K–A little wolf is bored and wants a playmate. He sets out to find a friend and asks a squirrel to play. The squirrel replies, “Sorry. Mommy says I’m not allowed to play with wolves.”The wolf moves on and gets the same response from little rabbit and little fox. This rejection begins to make him feel sad. Just when all hope is lost, a bee flies up and asks the little wolf to play and they have the most wonderful time. Before long, the animals who rejected the wolf as well as some additional animals are all asking to join in the fun. This simple tale carries a deep message about overcoming prejudices and stereotypes and teaches a lesson about choosing and making friends. The bright colors and detailed illustrations bring the characters to life and will allow for children to identify familiar animals.
VERDICT Recommended for general purchase for a collection geared toward toddlers and preschoolers as the story is a clever and friendly way to discuss a hefty topic with young readers
