PreS-Gr 1—"Whiffy" Wilson is a wolf with a slightly grumpy attitude, because he is sure that "school is BORING!" and would prefer to play and watch TV. His friend next door, Dotty, sweetly disagrees and convinces him to tag along with her so he can see all of the fun to be had. Predictably, Wilson has a fabulous first day at school, amazed at all of the playing he gets to do. Dotty, of course, gets it right and tells him, "We've been working hard all day!" Wilson loves school so much, in fact, that he wakes Dotty up on Saturday morning—not wanting to be late. Lord's expressive illustrations, with bold outlines and crayon mark ups, capture all of the emotions that Wilson experiences.
VERDICT Share this title with reluctant preschoolers who don't think they want to go to school. Let them see the fun they would miss by staying home.
