PreS—In springtime at the pond, Mama Frog finds a comfy place to lay her eggs and then heads off to find a suitable lily pad to call home. The eggs soon hatch, leaving five tadpoles hunting for her. They first encounter a duck who describes their mother in such a way that the tadpoles visit a fish. The fish, then a turtle, and lastly a crab each give the tadpoles an additional clue as to their mother's physical description. Listening for her calls, they finally find her awaiting them on a lily pad. P. D. Eastman's Are You My Mother?? (Random, 1960) remains the better choice for a book about newly born animals hunting for their mothers.—Laura Hunter, Mount Laurel Library, NJ
