Gr 3-6–In this first volume of a slightly magical slice-of-life series, Leopold uses his power of invisibility to play fart jokes and pranks on his sister Céline, his parents, and his schoolmates—though he also uses his ability to help Céline out, too. However, when Leopold meets his arch enemy, tension ramps up as Céline starts a training regimen to protect her little brother. The book consists of quick stories of two to three panels, with slapstick humor. Because the comic is translated from French, some school scenarios (like a headmistress instead of a principal) may be jarring to readers, but for the most part the plots will resonate, revolving around common topics such as bullies, schoolyard crushes, and junk food. Cute cartoon drawings have simplified backgrounds and bright palettes, and the dialogue pulls the story along.
VERDICT A lighthearted romp through sibling rivalry and school-age chaos. Recommended where Dav Pilkey is popular.
