Gr 3-7–After a tough year without their mom and their father being mostly absent, Lucy, Fred, and Herb Peach get exciting news. Their father announces that their mother’s last invention has sold. Eager to spend some time with his family by fulfilling his wife’s dream, the trio’s dad buys a used food truck and plans a cross-country adventure for his family. With many mishaps and much squabbling, however, it seems like this family vacation is doomed for disaster. If it’s not a success, their dad will never see the value of changing for the better. Can the Peaches find a way to succeed? Narrator Lu Banks’s voices for the engaging, realistic characters are spot-on and easy to distinguish. Her pace matches well with the author’s writing style and easily navigates the plot twists. The family dynamics are realistic. The plot is well developed, fun, and quirky but drags in places. Characters are cued white.
VERDICT Listeners who like Jeanne Birdsall’s “Penderwicks” series, realistic fiction, humor, and family adventures will enjoy listening to this book. Recommended for libraries where similar titles are popular.
