When I Grow Up

Clarion. Nov. 2021. 20p. Board $8.99. ISBN 9780358561866.
COPY ISBN
PreS-K–Akin to carnival photo cutout boards where children place their own faces through the hole so it looks like they have the body of an animal or a superhero, this book lets preschoolers see themselves as an astronaut, marine biologist, or software developer, among other occupations. The bodies of people in different careers are rendered in a bold, sharp-edged, animation style, one per spread, with two brief lines that describe the nature of their job.
VERDICT While there may be a class project use for this—photographing a kid’s face above the yellow slicker of a hose-wielding firefighter or over a veterinarian’s pet-filled lab coat—it may otherwise not be enough to draw children back for repeat readings.
